Bedford County Opioid Press Release
Due to the extensive damage and loss of life caused by the opioid crisis that was brought on by the unethical and over-prescribing of opioid medications, the state of Tennessee will be receiving over $1 billion over the next 18 years in settlement funds from several large corporations. Bedford County has been allocated a portion of these funds, which will be received in annual payments. The County has established the Bedford County Opioid Council to oversee the spending of these funds to ensure they are used to remediate the opioid crisis and save lives.
The Community Clinic is the sub-recipient approved by the Bedford County Board of Commissioners to manage the $224,617.91 FY24 allocation. Profits and non-profits are encouraged to apply for mini-grants. The Council will invite community organizations to apply for these funds annually.
For those who apply for funding, the Council will prioritize organizations formally structured to address substance use in Bedford County and serve Bedford County residents, and which use evidence-based programming backed by data. Funds must be spent on approved remediation uses as outlined by the Tennessee Opioid Abatement Council.
The Bedford County Opioid Council 2025 grant cycle for application submissions is February 15, 2025 through April 15, 2025. The Council plans to announce awards before June 30, 2025 with funding to be dispersed on July 1, 2025.
For more information about the application process and requirements, as well as other frequently asked questions, please visit the Bedford County and Community Clinic websites and email bedford-opioid@shelbyvilleclinic.org for grant application.
The Bedford Opioid Abatement Grant has a “brown” bag to provide the Bedford community to educate parents and families about substance abuse. The bag includes Narcan mist (with directions), Bedford County Resource Guide, Drug Rescue Brochure, Bedford County Health Department Brochure, LifeSource Family Solutions Pamphlet (mental health counseling), and 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline business card.
FREE brown bags are available at CCsBC, 200 Dover Street, Suite 202, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Fredia Lusk, Bedford Opioid administrator and Shanna Gaither, assistant administrator provided this resource from the Narcan donation from AmeriCares and Direct Relief.
